A true muslim believes in the angels, and if he doesn’t he cannot be a muslim as it is one of the pillars of iman.
But how and in what things we should believe in so that we have a complete understanding and strong belief in the angels ? Do we just believe in their existence or is there more to it? Let us see in this lesson on how to believe in the angels taken from the book of Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Jibrin , Tashil Al Aqeedah Al Islamiyyah.
The second pillar of iman is belief in the angels. We have to believe in 4 things:
- Iman in their existence: We should know that the angels are made of Noor (direct translation of Noor in English is light) i.e.; Allah created them from Noor, they never disobey what Allah orders them to do, and do what they are ordered to do. Allah created them for worshipping Him only.
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
“And they say: “The Most Gracious (Allah) has begotten a son (or children).” Glory to Him! They (i.e.; the angels) are but honoured slaves. They speak not until He has spoken, and they act on His command. He knows what is before them, and what is behind them, and they cannot intercede except for him with whom He is pleased. And they stand in awe for fear of Him.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:26-28)
- Belief in the names of the angels: We should believe in the names of the angels that Allah has made known to us. Like Jibreel, Mikail, Maalik, and those angels whose names we do not know. We should know that the number of angels is very large, we come to know from the story of the Prophets Ascension, how 70,000 angels enter Bait Al Mamur every day and they do not return to it.
- Belief in the characteristics of the angels: We should believe in the characteristics of the angels of which Allah has made known to us. Know that they have wings from Surah Al-Fatir,
“[All] praise is [due] to Allah , Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.” (35:01)
And also from the hadith we come to know this fact as Aishah reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “The angels are created from light.” (Muslim)
Similarly, we must believe that when Allah orders, the angels can appear to the people in the form of man, as we know from the Quran when Jibreel (عليه السلام) was sent to Maryam (رضي الله عنها) he was sent in the form of man,
“…Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.” (19:17)
- Belief in the duties of the angels: The angels always obey Allah, and carry out the duties assigned to them. Their duties include recording the deeds done by every man, bringing the revelation to the prophets, blowing the horn or trumpet on the day of judgement twice, praising Allah day and Night, some are the guards of Hell and Heaven and many more duties are mentioned in the Quran and sunnah.
When we believe in all the above-mentioned matters only then will our iman be complete in the angels.
May Allah make us have complete Iman in all the pillars. Ameen.
