10 or 12 units

As per the hadith of Aishah there are 12 units: “Four Rak’ah before Zuhr, two Rak’ah after it, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after Isha, and two Rak’ah before Fajr.” (Tirmidhi)

And 10 units as narrated Ibn ‘Umar, “I remember ten Rak’ah of Nawafil from the Prophet, two Rak’ah before the Zuhr prayer and two after it; two Rak’ah after Maghrib prayer in his house, and two Rak’ah after ‘Isha’ prayer in his house, and two Rak’ah before the Fajr prayer and at that time nobody would enter the house of the Prophet.” (Bukhari)

Timing:

Ibn Qudaamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The time for every Sunnah prayer that comes before a fard prayer is from the beginning of the time for that prayer, until the prayer is done, and the time for every Sunnah prayer that comes after a fard prayer is from after the prayer is done until the end of the time for that prayer.” (Taken from https://islamqa.info/en/33779)

Method of prayer:

They are to be prayed in units of 2, with no special supplications. As for the four units before dhuhr, it is permissible to pray them as a block of four, however, to pray it two by two is preferred.

Virtues:

Aishah narrated that Allah’s Messenger said: “Whoever is regular with twelve Rak’ah of Sunnah (prayer), Allah will build a house for him in Paradise: Four Rak’ah before Zuhr, two Rak’ah after it, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after Isha, and two Rak’ah before Fajr.” (Tirmidhi)

Umm Habibah (May Allah be pleased with her) the Mother of the Believers reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah saying, “A house will be built in Jannah for every Muslim who offers twelve Rak`ah of optional Salat other than the obligatory Salat in a day and a night (to seek the Pleasure of Allah).”
(Muslim)

Aisha narrated that the Prophet: “The two rakaats before dawn (fajr) prayer are better than the world and all that it contains.” (Muslim)

Aisha narrated that the Prophet was never more regular and strict in offering any Nawafil than the two rakaats (sunnah before) dawn (fajr) prayer. (Bukhari and Muslim)

When travelling:

The Prophet peace be upon him would leave off these units of prayer with the exclusion of the two units before fajr, when travelling.

Making them up:

It is permissible to make them up if one has an excuse which prevents him from praying them at their specified times,

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrated that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) prayed two rak‘ahs after ‘Asr; she asked him about that and he said, “Some people from ‘Abd al-Qays came to me and distracted me from offering the two rak‘ahs that come after Zuhr, so these are they.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Qays ibn ‘Amr said: The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) saw a man praying two rak‘ahs after Fajr. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Fajr prayer twice?” The man said to him: I did not pray the two rak‘ahs that come before it, so I prayed them (now). And the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not say anything. (Ibn Majah, Saheeh by Sh Al-Albaani)

A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that if the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not pray four rak‘ahs before Zuhr, he would pray them afterwards. (Tirmidhi, Hasan by Sh Al-Albaani)
