Myths Regarding the Ka’bah

The ka’bah: the holiest muslim site on earth. Muslims revere it, and face it as a direction for prayer. It is a symbol of unity, unity of muslims, and unity of all previous prophets. Muslims would travel great distances to reach it, to see its magnificent sight, to touch its beautiful kiswa, kiss it and more.

However, there are many myths that surround the Ka’bah that has gained root amongst non-muslims, and ignorant muslims, and those who perhaps have never seen it.

Let’s begin with the first myth: Muslims worship the Ka’bah. This is far from the truth. Muslims worship one God, Allah. The Ka’bah is merely a direction faced in prayer, to unite muslims. Muslims do not bow or prostrate to the Ka’bah at all, they only bow and prostrate to Allah. Hence muslims can pray in any place in the world.

Muslims touch the ka’bah to imitate the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. Some touch it out of awe and fascination at this great building that witnessed many great events in Islamic History. It witnessed, the Prophet Abraham, and Ishma’el and Muhammad peace be upon them. It is not mandated to kiss it, or cling on it, or wipe one’s face or clothes against it, rather these extreme practices have been done by some who are ignorant, or overly passionate.

Another huge misconception, is that the Ka’bah houses the idol Shiva Lingham which muslims worship. The inside of the Ka’bah is bare, there is nothing inside it. Every year the doors are opened to clean it and to welcome prestigious guests. This is often broadcasted on live television, and it is clear for all to see, that there is nothing inside the Ka’bah. Furthermore, muslims do not build or carve statues of any shape or form, as this is against the basic principle of worshiping Allah who is beyond human imagination.

Next up, no bird flies over the Ka’bah. Some believe that the ka’bah is so holy that no bird is able to fly over it, as though there is a radar system in place, preventing the birds. This is not true. Birds fly over the Ka’bah constantly, they perch on its edge, and do what birds do.

Others believe the Ka’bah hovers over the ground. It is not resting, nor rooted in the earth, but floating. It’s very easy to dispel this myth, simply look at the many images of the ka’bah that are available, look at video footage, and if you get a chance to go, have a peep. The Ka’bah is like any other building with a foundation on the ground.

Others hold the belief that the rain water that falls off the ka’bah is holy and has benefit. It is blessed, and so they collect it in a container, and bathe and drink it. I would strongly advise against this, firstly because there is nothing reported from the Prophet nor the salaf on the matter. And secondly, as mentioned previously, birds do what birds do, including leaving droppings. Hence the water that falls off the top of the Ka’bah is contaminated with bird droppings, as well as sand, and dust.

What myths have you heard?

Ya’juj And Ma’juj Part 3

A Closer Look

All praise is due to Allah, the Creator and Sustainer, and may His choicest Peace and Blessings be upon His pious servants.

A lot of people still have confusion about Yajuj and Majuj; are they human beings, wild beasts or a different creation?

Yajuj and Majuj are actually human beings which are on earth yet encrusted. They are cloistered and it is stated in the Holy Qur’an that Allah has held Yajuj and Majuj behind a barrier that was created with iron and copper by Dhu’l-Qarnayn.

Zainab Bint Jahsh (May Allah be pleased with her) said that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) once came to her in a state of fear and said: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. Woe unto the Arabs from a danger that has come near. An opening has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this,” making a circle with his thumb and index finger. Zainab Bint Jahsh said: “O Allah’s Messenger! Shall we be destroyed even though there are pious persons among us?” He said: “Yes, when the evil persons will increase.” And in another narration the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah has made an opening in the wall of the Yajuj and Majuj (people) like this, and he made with his hand (with the help of his fingers).” (Bukhari and Muslim).

Imam Al-Bukhari transmitted in his Sahih the following Hadith: A man told the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he had seen the dam of Gog and Magog. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: “How did you find it?” The man said: “I found it like Al-Burd Al-Muhabbar (striped garments).” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “You have seen it.”

Ibn Kathir expounded in his books that Yajuj and Majuj are among Prophet Nuh’s offspring. Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japeth. Shem was the father of the Arabs; Ham was the father of the Sudanese; and Japheth was the father of the Turks.

According to the descriptions narrated by ahadith, Yajuj and Majuj belong to the Turkic Mongol race, have small eyes, small flat noses and wide faces. Their faces look like hammered-out shields.

Before this world is shattered, the nation of Yajuj and Majuj will turn up to cause great havoc and to shun peace.

It is imperative that we learn from these signs since they are meant for us to pay heed. As believers of Islam, we believe in the signs of the Day. We believe that this world has to end. And therefore, we are constantly engaged in working for the here-after as prudent believers. Aren’t we?

Ya’juj and Ma’juj

Bullet Hole in Metal

Do you know that Yajuj and Majuj are the barbaric tribes that will spread filth on Earth?

They are the horrendous tribes that are caged behind the iron and copper bars. They are the ones who will cause havoc on the face of the Earth.

It is stated in the Holy Quran that Allah has held Yajuj and Majuj behind a barrier that was created with iron and copper by Dhu’l-Qarnayn.
According to the Quran, they will be set loose shortly before the arrival of the Day of Judgment as Allah Almighty has mentioned:
Until, when Ya’juj and Ma’juj are let loose (from their barrier), and they swiftly swarm from every mound. And the true promise (Day of Resurrection) shall draw near (to fulfillment)…”

 [Surah al-Anbiya:96-97]

Another Hadith is narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad that the Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Verily, Gog and Magog dig through the dam every day, till they could see the sun rays (through it), and their leader would say: ‘Go back and you will finish it tomorrow.’ On the next day, they find it as strong as before. Till when their appointed term comes and Allah desires to send them against mankind, they dig it till they could see the sun rays (through it) and their leader says: ‘Go back and you will finish it tomorrow, if Allah wills!’ On the next day, they find it as they had left the day before and they dig through it and come against mankind. They will drink (every drop of water they pass by). The people will resort to strongholds. And, Gog and Magog will throw their arrows towards the sky. When they come back to them stained with what looks like blood, they will say: ‘We have defeated the people on earth and those in the heaven as well.’ Then, Allah the Almighty will send against them worms in their necks that will kill them all. Allah’s Messenger (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “By Him in Whose Hand Muhammad’s soul rests! Living creatures of the earth would go fat and be thankful due to eating their flesh and (drinking their) blood.”

Yajuj and majuj will rack and ruin the Earth. This world will practically be blown to smithereens upon their arrival.

A wave of fear rolled upon me when I read a dreadful fact about them. It is said that they will pass the Lake of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) drinking all the water from there in and leaving not even a drop for us! How numerous they must be!

They will drink and consume all water they come across, and destroy everything they encounter.

Imagine this horrific scene of devastation. Today, we know of swarms of locusts that consume everything in their path, and the destruction they leave behind. Towards the onset of the final hour, Ya’juj and Ma’juj will be the swarm, humans intent on carnage in their quest for dominance…How arrogant and ignorant they must be to wish to conquer the heavens!

May Allah protect us from the trial of Ya’juj and Ma’juj.

Brother and sisters, it is important that we learn about these signs, and seek protection in Allah from it. For none with sound mind would like to face the peril of Ya’juj and Ma’juj.
